The sights that matter, with the hours and prices to plan around.
Six active monasteries on UNESCO-listed rocks (1988). Typical €5 cash at each gate — no combined pass, no cards. St Stephen is easiest; Holy Trinity is hardest. Hours checked Aug 2026.
Great Meteoron sits on the highest pillar. It is the oldest and largest of the six active houses. UNESCO listed Meteora in 1988. Summer hours (1 April–31 October) are 09:30–15:00, closed Tuesday. Winter hours are 09:30–14:00, closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Extra closures: 5–7 August, 30 September–1 October, and 1–28 February (meteoromonastery.gr/en/wizyta/, tel. 24320-22278, sprawdzane w sierpniu 2026 r.).
Typical entry is €5 cash at the gate. There is no combined monastery pass and cards are not taken. Children under 12 are commonly free — confirm at the gate. Dress: covered shoulders; men no shorts; women no trousers or sleeveless tops — wraps at most gates (Infotourist Meteora + meteoromonastery.gr). Allow 60–90 minutes inside plus the steps. Dedykowana strona Great Meteoron covers tickets, closed days and how to pair the visit with Varlaam.
Six active houses. Typical €5 cash each. Closed days differ — check before you climb. Hours from Infotourist Meteora unless noted, checked Aug 2026.
Plan around closed weekdays, not around a combined ticket — there is none. KTEL Kalampaka–Meteora is €2.00 (ktel-trikala.gr, Aug 2026). Stay in Kalambaka for trains and coaches, or Kastraki if you want to walk to the nearest houses. St Stephen is the easiest (bridge, lift). Holy Trinity is the hardest (~140 steps). Full hours table: Infotourist Meteora.

Summer 09:00–16:00 / winter 09:00–15:00, closed Friday. Pair with Great Meteoron the same day if both are open (Infotourist).
Nunnery on a narrow pillar, bridged from the road. Summer 09:30–16:30 (Sun 10:30) / winter 09:30–14:00 (Sun 10:30), closed Wednesday.
09:00–17:00 both seasons, open daily (Infotourist). Smallest active house — 1527 frescoes by Theophanes the Cretan. Typical €5 cash.
Hardest access — about 140 steps plus path. Summer 09:00–16:30 / winter 10:00–16:00, closed Thursday. Typical €5 cash (Infotourist).
Easiest house — bridge and lift, no stairs. Summer 09:00–13:20 & 15:30–17:30 (Sun 09:30) / winter 09:30–13:00 & 15:00–17:00, closed Monday.
Theopetra Cave is the ticketed archaeology stop west of Kalambaka — Palaeolithic cave plus museum rooms. Full €5 / reduced €3. Hours 08:30–15:30, closed Tuesday (odysseus.culture.gr, checked Aug 2026). No regular tourist bus; taxi or car, about 15 minutes from town. Use it on a second or third day, or when rain makes the monastery steps unsafe.
Great Meteoron includes museum rooms inside the monastery ticket — typical €5 cash at the gate, no separate museum pass (meteoromonastery.gr, Aug 2026). St Nicholas Anapafsas is the smallest house; the reason to pay is the 1527 frescoes by Theophanes the Cretan, not a standalone museum building (Infotourist Meteora). Other houses keep small treasuries behind the same €5 gate fee. There is no combined monastery-plus-cave ticket.
State-site hours at Theopetra can shift on public holidays — check odysseus.culture.gr on the day. Monastery museums follow each house’s closed weekday, not the Ministry calendar. Bring cash; cards are not taken at monastery gates.
Monastery circuit road — pull-offs between Great Meteoron and Varlaam look across the gorge at both houses; this is the pair most photographs show. Gates close mid-afternoon (Great Meteoron 15:00 summer), so sunset is from the road or Kastraki, not from inside. Kalambaka looks up at the pillars from the Peneios side — free, and useful if you are based at the train and bus hub.
Holy Trinity and St Stephen sit on the east side; the east-pair walk finishes downhill into town. Wear shoes with grip — sandstone and steps get slick after rain. Dress code applies only inside the houses, not on the public road.
Last light from Kastraki — no monastery ticket. Gates close mid-afternoon; shoot from the road or village after 15:00.
Stay here if the point is sunset and walking. Town-loop from Kalambaka is 45–70 minutes on the signed road.
Węzeł kolejowy i KTEL. Filary widoczne z ulic miasta – bez biletu, bez wspinaczki.
The pillars themselves cost nothing. Walk Kalambaka streets and look up. Walk to Kastraki on the signed road (45–70 minutes). Hiking paths from the village reach the lower slopes without a gate fee — the Mapa miasta marks kastraki-anapafsas and town-loop. Exterior views of all six houses from the circuit road are free; you pay only if you enter.
Kalambaka church is a rainy-day indoor stop with no monastery ticket. Confirm service times locally and dress as you would at the houses: covered shoulders, no shorts for men, no trousers or sleeveless tops for women. Children under 12 are commonly free at monastery gates — still confirm, because that is not a street-view saving.
Budget the cash for the houses you actually enter. Three monasteries at €5 each plus the KTEL loop at €2.00 is €17 before food (ktel-trikala.gr and Infotourist, Aug 2026). Skip a house rather than skip the walk — the UNESCO landscape is the rocks, not only the interiors.
The six active monasteries: Great Meteoron, Varlaam, Rousanou, St Nicholas Anapafsas, Holy Trinity and St Stephen. Typical €5 cash each, no combined pass (Infotourist Meteora, checked Aug 2026). Add Theopetra Cave (€5/€3, closed Tuesday — odysseus.culture.gr) if you have a second day. St Stephen is the easiest access; Holy Trinity is the hardest.
Do centrum Kalambaka i wioski Kastraki można dojść pieszo. Objazd klasztoru to nie spacer po mieście — skorzystaj z autobusu KTEL Kalampaka–Meteora (2,00 EUR, ktel-trikala.gr, sierpień 2026), taksówki lub szlaków turystycznych z Kastraki. St Stephen ma most i windę. Trójcy Świętej ma około 140 stopni. Przy bramkach obowiązuje dress code.
One day fits St Stephen plus one or two other houses if they are open. Two days cover Great Meteoron with Varlaam, then the east pair (Holy Trinity and St Stephen). Three days add Theopetra Cave and a walk between Kalambaka and Kastraki. Check closed days before you go — each house shuts a different weekday (Infotourist Meteora).
